Free 30 Minute Consultation

The best way for us to get started is with an introductory consultation.  We chat by phone, Zoom, or in person.

I’ll ask you to share a brief history of your child’s education and current concerns.  Once I understand your concerns, I’ll either:

  • Provide you resources you can access on your own
  • Define an action plan in which I can help, or
  • Refer you to a third party who can meet your needs

To request a consult, simply call me at the number below or fill out my contact form with your availability.

IEP Support

If your child has an Individual Education Plan (IEP), I’ll review that thing line by line.

Working with you, we’ll determine changes that should be made, and I’ll help you document requested changes in the form of a parent concerns letter, meeting agenda, or a list of IEP exceptions.

With your input, we’ll put together a plan to improve your child’s progress or resolve problems.

Records Review

Records I may need to review to assist you include:

  • State testing results
  • Student study team (SST) notes
  • IEPs and 504 plans
  • School based assessments
  • Outside provider assessments
  • Independent educational evaluations (IEE’s)
  • Written communications with the school
  • Disciplinary records

If you don’t have a complete set of records, I will help you obtain them.

Meeting Attendance

If your child has a disability or school problems, there are meetings. Many meetings. Have you been going alone?

Do you have any idea what a relief it is to bring someone who has been to dozens of these meetings before?

I’ll help you request, prepare for, attend, debrief, and define action items for school meetings including:

  • Study Study Team (SST) meetings
  • IEP and 504 meetings
  • Outside provider presentations
  • Discipline determinations

I’ll provide you meeting notes and an audio recording of each meeting in accordance with the law

IEP/504 Advocacy

Sometimes the plan your school comes up with does not meet your child’s need. And you see it with increasing frustration. Sometimes your school thinks the best plan is to “wait and see,” but you know better.

But perhaps you don’t know how to resolve the difference in perspective.

I help with that.

My advocacy services include:

  • Analysis of IEP goals and progress
  • Helping parents communicate concerns
  • Requesting Independent Educational Evaluations (IEE’s)
  • Ensuring the team considers and implements outside expert recommendations
  • Helping teams work through differences and come to a consensus.

On occasions when the IEP team cannot come to a consensus:

  • I represent parents in informal dispute resolutions, or
  • I make referrals to qualified special education attorneys

Strategy

One of the most important deliverables I provide is strategy.

Some strategies I have implemented include:

  • Additional academic intervention
  • Customized services to help with coping and emotional regulation
  • Changes in placement
  • Creating customized school schedules
  • Bringing in outside experts to school meetings
  • Identifying previously overlooked disabilities
  • Increasing supervision, support and communication
  • Incorporating assistive technology
  • Getting outside tutoring paid for by the school district
  • Seeking help for the child through private medical insurance
  • Seeking help through outside agencies

Education Crisis Support

If your child is experiencing an education crisis, such as:

  • School refusal
  • Disciplinary action
  • Teacher conflict
  • Failing grades
  • An unwanted placement change

I can help you navigate the process of working with your school in a timely manner to resolve your crisis.

Educational Placement Consulting

Today, students have many options besides their school of residence:

  • Charter schools
  • Nonpublic schools
  • Private schools
  • 1:1 private schools
  • Virtual learning platforms
  • Independent learning centers
  • Independent study programs
  • Homeschooling through a charter
  • Homeschooling independently
  • Intra- or inter-district transfers

Time to find a new school or placement?  Or want to fight a change the school proposes?

Many parents feel uncertain when it comes to big changes. I’ll help you understand your options, identify alternatives you may not be aware of, and go observe potential programs, to ensure you can make your decision confidently

I tirelessly research school placement options for the students I serve.

Demystifying Student Assessments

Your student may undergo weeks of educational assessments, at the conclusion of which:

  • You receive a 100 page report
  • Your student receives…nothing

I create age appropriate graphical summaries of complex testing for both parents and students.

My goal is to help you understand and focus on key strengths, challenges, and recommendations.

“Julie helped me pick through my fears and worries and define clear objectives for my 504 meeting. She helped me identify goals for my meeting I didn’t even realize I had.

I walked out of that meeting on top of the world! I got everything my son needed, and I felt confident we covered all issues.
